धृतराष्ट्र उवाच:-
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः ।
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ॥१॥

Meaning of Verse 1 of the Bhagavad Gita | अनुवाद -
Dhritarashtra said - O Sanjaya, in the land of Dharma Kurukshetra (Dharma Kshetra is an adjective of Kuru-region. They had some ancestors named Kuru, in the same place of Kuru's religion) my sons and the sons of Pandu gathered together with the desire to fight, and what they did?
धृतराष्ट्र बोले- हे सञ्जय, धर्मभूमि कुरुक्षेत्र में (धर्मक्षेत्र कुरु- क्षेत्र का विशेषण है । उनके कुरु नाम के कोई आदिपुरुष थे, उन्हीं कुरु के धर्म- स्थान में) मेरे पुत्रों तथा पाण्डु के पुत्रों ने युद्ध करने की अभिलाषा से इकट्ठ े होकर क्या किया ?
Bhagavad Gita Commentry | व्याख्या-
"Dhritarashtra". From the word dhrit, we have been holding on since before. Which, and understanding the state by the word nation; The gentleman who is already holding the kingdom is called Dhritarashtra. whose influence is spread everywhere in this body-like state. The one Who is the enjoyer of the body-like state and the happiness and sorrow? is known as Dhritarashtra. The enjoyer of the pleasures and pains of this body is the mind. Therefore, consider the mind as Dhritarashtra. Shabd-Sparsh-Roop-Ras-Smell does not have the power to take the subject. The group of subjects that are taken inside the body with the help of sense organs (ear, skin, eye, tongue, and nose), the enjoyer of the mind, therefore the mind becomes blind. It is said that Dhritarashtra is also blind.
“धृतराष्ट्रः” । धृत शब्दसे पहिलेसे धारण करके रहे हैं। जो, और राष्ट्र शब्दसे राज्यको समझना; जो महाशय पहिलेसे राज्यको धारण कर रहे हैं उन्हीं को धृतराष्ट्र कहा जाता है । इस शरीररूप राज्यके सर्वत्र जिनका प्रभाव विस्तृत (फैला है। शरीररूप राज्यका और सुख और दुःखका भोग करने वाला जो है उसीको धृतराष्ट्र जानना । इस शरीर के सुख-दुःखका भोक्ता मन है । अतवए मन ही को धृतराष्ट्र कहकर मानना । और मन जो है उसको स्वयं (शब्द-स्पर्श-रूप-रस-गन्ध) विषय लेनेकी शक्ति नहीं है । ज्ञानेन्द्रिय (कर्ण, त्वक्, चक्षु, जिह्वा, नासिका) की सहायता से जो विषयसमूह शरीरके भीतर लिया जाता है मन ही उसका भोग करने वाला है, इसलिये मनको अन्धा कहा जाता है । धृतराष्ट्र भी अन्ध हैं ।
